Summer Trainee, Risk Control & Reporting

Perm/Temp:  Temporary

Espoo, FI

Are you curious to use your analytical skills for Risk Management?

About The Role

We are looking for a summer trainee to join us in the Risk Control & Reporting team, based in Espoo, from May to September. Our team belongs to Fortum’s Corporate Risk function, which is responsible for the development of Fortum’s risk management framework, i.e. creating instructions, processes and tools for effective controls to keep the risks of the company within acceptable levels.

In this role, you will run the daily operative risk reporting for Fortum’s current market values, positions and risk exposures on the financial energy market. You will be in close contact with Fortum’s Financial Trading Desk to understand their daily business in hedging the company’s power production with financial instruments on electricity, gas and emission rights. You will be responsible for analyzing the results of the daily risk reports, identifying data issues, trouble-shooting where necessary and keeping up a good communication with all our reporting stakeholders. We also hope you will use your coding skills to implement improvements to our reports and processes, as we are striving for more automatization.

About You

You are committed to deliver a reliable reporting on a daily basis and curious to learn about good risk management practices. You have fun in interpreting quantitative reporting results and drilling-down to what is causing their changes. You have the endurance to dive into the complex data stemming from Fortum’s financial trading activities on the energy- and commodity market and are not shy to discuss their impact on the risk reporting with our stakeholders.

We hope that you apply for the position if you have:

  • You are a master student or recent graduate in a quantitative field (e.g. mathematics, physics, computer science), engineering or finance.
  • You have experience in data management and data analytics using SQL.
  • You have experience in utilizing Power BI for creating reports to visualize complex data.
  • You have a basic understanding of the energy industry, the derivatives market and financial instruments.
  • Coding skills in Python as well as knowledge how to utilize AI to automate daily tasks are seen as an advantage.
  • Good communication skills and fluency in English is required.

We offer you

An excellent opportunity to get to know the Risk Management business, which is a great field to make the most of your quantitative background and data management skills. You will learn from experienced risk experts and get interesting insides from the trading strategies how a company like Fortum is managing their financial risks on a daily basis.

During the summer you will:

  • Receive an introduction to your tasks and be supported by your team.
  • Work with interesting and diverse tasks with real responsibility.
  • Enjoy a hybrid work model with flexible working hours, allowing you to balance remote and in-office work.
  • Learn about our company, the energy industry, and the sustainable solutions that we are working with.
  • Get the opportunity to network with other trainees.
  • Gain valuable experience, that can lead to a career with us. Many of our trainees continue after the summer, working part-time while continuing studies or as thesis worker.
