THESIS - Hydro power dam monitoring with machine learning models

Perm/Temp:  Regular

Sth Solna, SE

Background

Fortum’s hydropower dams are part of society’s critical infrastructure. To ensure public safety, it is necessary to continuously monitor and understand their state. In the monitoring of hydropower plant equipment, Fortum is already using machine learning models at large scale, and a similar approach has also been tested in the context of dam monitoring with promising result. More development is however needed before machine learning becomes a practically useful and integrated part of the dam monitoring process.

Objective

The objective of the Master Thesis Project is to further develop Fortum’s work with machine learning applied to dam monitoring, with a focus on aspects that increase the practical usability. The project may focus on one or a few aspects such as: model evaluation methodology, more dam failure scenarios, new modeling approaches, model interpretability, and model output visualization.
