Senior Environmental Specialist
Sth Solna, SE
Do you want to help shape the environmental foundations of the next generation of energy in the Nordics? Join Fortum and contribute to environmental permitting and impact assessments for major new nuclear and other low-carbon energy projects, working at the intersection of sustainability, technology, regulation and society.
About the role
In this position, you will join Fortum’s Engineering and Projects business line as a member of the Radiation Safety and Environment team. Engineering & Projects provides technical expertise and delivers projects across our Nuclear Businesses, employing around 200 top professionals. We support new nuclear development, external customers through Nuclear Services, our co-owned nuclear plants in Sweden and Finland, and our fully owned Loviisa Nuclear Power Plant in Finland.
While the team is primarily based in Espoo, Finland, your position will be based in Solna, Sweden, due to the role’s close interaction with Swedish stakeholders. You will have an important senior expert role in environmental permitting and environmental impact assessment (EIA) processes within the nuclear industry. Your work will cover topics including cooling-water impacts, aquatic environments, nature values and biodiversity.
The role will initially focus on new nuclear development in Sweden. Working closely with project teams, consultants, authorities and other key stakeholders, you will contribute to environmental permitting and EIA activities, provide expert input to environmental studies and assessments, and review related documentation and deliverables. You will help ensure that environmental requirements and considerations are appropriately addressed throughout project development and support dialogue with authorities and external stakeholders.
Over time, the role may expand to other strategic projects within Engineering and Projects. Initially, the selected person will focus on new nuclear development in Sweden and supporting our external customers, with opportunities to take on broader assignments and projects across our Nuclear Business over time.
About you
This is a senior specialist position requiring experience in environmental permitting and environmental impact assessment processes typically gained through several years of relevant professional work. You are comfortable reviewing complex environmental studies and providing well-founded expert advice to project teams and decision-makers.
You have a strong understanding of environmental issues relevant to major energy projects, such as cooling water impacts, aquatic environments, nature values or biodiversity. Knowledge of other permitting processes related to project development is considered an advantage. You have experience working with Swedish authorities and a good understanding of Swedish environmental legislation and regulatory requirements. Experience in land-use planning is also considered an advantage.
To succeed in this role, you can combine big-picture thinking and a development-oriented mindset with careful attention to detail. You work independently and proactively, manage your own responsibilities effectively, and can coordinate environmental work and provide professional guidance to consultants and other contributors.
You have a relevant higher academic degree, for example in natural sciences, environmental science or environmental engineering, or another suitable educational background. You communicate confidently with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders. Knowledge of the Swedish energy sector and the Nordic energy market is considered a strong advantage. Fluency in written and spoken English and Swedish is required. Finnish language skills are considered an advantage.
The role involves regular collaboration with colleagues in Espoo and travel within Sweden and between Sweden and Finland. Occasional travel to other international destinations may also be required.
