About the role

In this role, you will provide pragmatic, commercially focused legal advice, with a particular emphasis on Swedish Environmental Law and Energy Law, permitting matters, customer contracts (both B2B and B2C) and negotiations, site development agreements and dispute resolution.

You will work closely with the business and other legal professionals, managing complex legal matters independently while contributing to Fortum’s operations in a highly regulated and evolving energy environment.

 

As Legal Counsel, you will support Fortum’s business by identifying and managing legal opportunities and risks and translating complex legal questions into clear, practical business-relevant recommendations and solutions.

You will collaborate closely with internal stakeholders and external advisers, while taking independent responsibility for your assigned matters.

 

Key responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

  • Provide clear, pragmatic and commercially focused legal advice to the business.
  • Manage environmental and energy law matters, including permitting and regulatory processes.
  • Support permit applications and proceedings relating to water operations under Chapter 11 of the Swedish Environmental Code.
  • Advise on environmental quality standards, water management regulation, Natura 2000 assessments and other nature conservation matters.
  • Represent or support Fortum in proceedings before the Land and Environment Court and other courts and tribunals.
  • Monitor relevant developments in Swedish and EU legislation and assess their implications for Fortum.
  • Manage litigation and dispute resolution matters in collaboration with the business and external counsel.
  • Provide legal support in other relevant areas, which may include commercial contracts and negotiations, real estate, corporate or construction law.
  • Build effective relationships with business stakeholders (both internal and external) and contribute to cross-functional collaboration.

 

About you

You are a solution-oriented legal professional who combines strong legal analysis with sound commercial judgement. You are comfortable taking ownership of demanding matters and can work independently in a structured and systematic way. You´re an effective communicator and strong collaborator.

 

You communicate complex legal issues clearly and tailor your advice to the needs of the business. You also enjoy collaboration and can build trusted relationships with colleagues and stakeholders across the organization.  You embrace legal technology, digital tools and AI adoption in your work.

 

Essential requirements

  • A Swedish Master of Laws, LL.M., degree.
  • Ideally 4 years of experience in legal practice.
  • Relevant experience in environmental law, energy law, commercial contracts, litigation and dispute resolution, or another area of legal practice relevant to the role.
  • Excellent written and spoken Swedish and English.
  • Ability to manage legal matters independently and provide clear, pragmatic and commercially focused legal advice.

 

We consider the following an advantage

  • Experience of environmental permitting under the Swedish Environmental Code, particularly permit applications and proceedings concerning water operations under Chapter 11.
  • Experience acting as counsel before the Land and Environment Court, Mark- och miljödomstolen, or other courts and tribunals.
  • Knowledge of environmental quality standards and water management regulation.
  • Experience with Natura 2000 assessments and other nature conservation permitting or regulatory processes.
  • Experience of EU regulatory frameworks and their implementation in Swedish law.
  • Experience in commercial contracts, real estate, corporate or construction law.
  • Legal experience from the energy sector or another regulated industry.
