VP, Corporate Legal (Deputy to GC)

We are looking for a VP, Corporate Legal to lead the Corporate Legal team and serve as Deputy to the General Counsel, managing group governance and complex legal matters for Fortum in Espoo.
About the Role
You will manage group governance, litigation, M&A, competition law, intellectual property and other agreed matters, and lead the Corporate Legal Team. You’ll work across short and long‑term initiatives, guiding the company through regulatory obligations and high‑impact decisions. You will provide expert counsel to Fortum LT and the Board on governance and regulatory matters, and advance digitalization of legal processes, utilizing tools and harmonizing ways of working to improve efficiency and quality.
Key responsibilities include:
- Manage group governance, litigation, M&A, competition law, IP and other matters as agreed
- Lead the Corporate Legal Team
- Ensure governance for a publicly listed company, including MAR compliance and other regulatory obligations
- Lead competition law, M&A and regulatory frameworks with internal/external counsel
- Monitor, analyse and advise on the legal environment and regulatory changes affecting the company
- Support risk assessment, investigations and audits
- Oversee governance related to subsidiaries and ownerships, including complex structures
- Develop partnerships and represent the company with key stakeholders and authorities
- Advance digital tools and legal process digitalization, including harmonization and adoption of common tooling and practices
- Manage the legal budget within assigned areas
- Drive cost‑effective operations and oversight of external law firms
- Coordinate jointly with Meetings PMO secretaries for Board committees and LT committees
- Assist the GC, EVP Legal and act as Deputy to the GC on corporate legal leadership matters
- Ability to manage high-pressure situations and deliver under tight timelines
About You
You are an experienced corporate legal leader in the setting of a publicly listed company, comfortable operating from strategy to hands‑on delivery. You combine sound legal judgement with strong people leadership and stakeholder management, and you are confident in complex, high‑impact environments.
What we’re looking for:
- Masters of Law degree
- 18+ years of experience in relevant, complex legal work
- Deep understanding of corporate governance, MAR compliance, M&A, competition law, litigation and intellectual property topics
- Proven ability to lead, build and coach high‑performing teams, while role‑modelling the right competencies and behaviours
- Track record as a trusted advisor to executive leadership and the Board on governance and regulatory matters
- Strong capability in planning and managing complex matters
- Excellent stakeholder management skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across internal functions and with external partners (authorities/regulators)
- Ability to influence decision‑making, balance business and legal risk, and operate with high integrity and resilience
- Drive for continuous improvement, including digitalization of legal processes and effective tool utilization
- Excellent communication skills
