About the role

The New Nuclear business line is responsible for developing and implementing Fortum’s nuclear newbuild projects, as well as nuclear research, development, and nuclear strategy.

The Strategy and R&D team is responsible for planning and tracking the execution of Fortum's strategy for the entire Nuclear Generation Business Unit. This is done in close collaboration with the nuclear Business Lines and Corporate Strategy team. The team also oversees Nuclear Research & Development, which includes internal project portfolios, strategic projects, and research collaborations.

 

We are looking for a Master Thesis Worker

 

This role offers you the opportunity to complete your Master’s Thesis as part of a larger nuclear R&D project on innovative nuclear technologies. You will study Generation IV nuclear technologies from various perspectives, focusing on technological opportunities and barriers, development maturity, deployment timelines, and competitiveness.

Your position will be within the Strategy and R&D team of the New Nuclear business line, located in Espoo, Finland.

Your main focus areas are:

  • Conducting a literature study on the history, drivers, and state-of-the-art of Generation IV nuclear technologies.
  • Providing updates on select important current public and private GEN IV projects aimed at developing the technologies and deploying new reactors.
  • Recognizing and assessing the main barriers and uncertainties in some of the technologies within your domain of expertise.
  • Writing high-quality thesis and presentation materials to support the communication of the main findings.

More detailed thesis research questions and scope will be developed based on the interests and expertise of the selected applicant.

The position is located in Espoo, Finland. However, some travel to other Fortum office locations and to external research partners may be required.

 

About you

  • We expect you to be close to completing your studies, with a good track record.
  • You should have a background in (engineering) physics, energy, or materials science.
  • Expertise in multiple areas or a clear interest in expanding your skillset is considered an advantage.
  • Any past experience with power plants, especially nuclear, is beneficial.
  • You will need to evaluate technologies from a wide array of viewpoints with sound judgment, in collaboration with other Fortum experts.
  • Working with internal and external stakeholders should come naturally to you.
  • You possess strong oral and written communication skills in English.
