Investment Analyst

Espoo, FI

About the role

This position as an Investment Analyst is within the Investment Analysis team, which provides analysis services for investment projects and portfolios to Fortum’s business and development units. The team drives investment portfolio optimisation across the Group by consolidating project initiatives and supporting capital allocation efforts. It develops asset degradation models to optimise asset intervention timing and scope, promoting data-based decision-making.

You will be responsible for financial modelling, scrutinising business cases, and co-creating solutions with colleagues from different units. This role offers opportunities to learn about the asset-intensive energy business and develop problem-solving and analytical skills. You will be a member of a highly motivated professional team, engaging with Fortum's key project and business developers, experts, and managers.

The following will be part of your areas of responsibilities:

  • You will be involved hands-on in large development/investment projects’ decision-making process and will contribute to Fortum’s capital allocation efforts.
  • Development of frameworks to equalise monetary and non-monetary benefits on common economic scale.
  • Building and improving optimisation algorithms and development of new assessment tools and improvement of existing ones.

About you

We’re looking for someone who is genuinely curious and capable of tackling complex business and technical problems, both conceptually and through quantitative methods or simulation. You should be able to synthesise and clearly communicate complex information. Strong influencing skills, resilience, and the ability to navigate in discussions with professionalism are important in this role.

Furthermore, we see that you bring the following:

  • You hold a master’s degree in economics, engineering, science or finance. We highly value excellent academic performance.
  • Fluency in English is needed – additional language skills, especially Finnish and Swedish, are considered beneficial.
  • As for experience requirements, you can be a recent graduate from university with some work experience, or you may already have accumulated several years of professional work experience from some field. The role can be tailored to fit both.
  • We expect you to be confident using MS Excel and skilled at creating clear, professional presentations in MS PowerPoint.
  • Programming skills in at least one major language (e.g., Python, Java) are essential.
  • You have good understanding of applied statistics and data analysis. Ability to validate and interpret statistical results in business contexts is crucial.
  • Practical experience with statistical modelling, probability distributions, risk analysis, and/or time-series analysis is highly valued.
  • We also highly value experience in building and maintaining quantitative decision-support systems, particularly for portfolio analysis, risk assessment, or financial modelling in energy/utilities or similar capital-intensive industries.
  • 1–2 years of recent experience in the analysis of energy asset investment cases is beneficial.
  • Understanding of linear programming, mixed-integer programming and optimisation solvers is beneficial.
