Become the Head of HSSEQ (Health, Safety, Security, Environment, and Quality) for Wind & Solar and lead the development and execution of our HSSEQ strategy across all onshore wind and solar PV operations.
This position can be based at our offices in Espoo, Finland or Solna, Sweden.
About the role
The Head of HSSEQ for Wind & Solar will develop, implement, and continuously improve the HSSEQ strategy and frameworks across all onshore wind as well as solar PV operations. This role also covers Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and hybrid renewable energy projects, ensuring a consistent approach to HSSEQ standards and risk management. The role is pivotal in fostering a culture of safety, environmental responsibility, and operational excellence across the entire project lifecycle — from development to construction and operations.
In the role as Head of HSSEQ, the following will be your key responsibilities:
Strategic Leadership

Develop and maintain a comprehensive HSSEQ strategy aligned with organizational objectives for wind, solar, and related energy projects (BESS and hybrid).

Lead and mentor a multidisciplinary HSSEQ team, setting clear objectives and performance standards.
Policy & Compliance

Establish and update HSSEQ policies and procedures in alignment with local and international regulations (ISO 45001, ISO 14001, 9001, relevant EU directives, etc.).

Monitor compliance across all sites and project stages, including design, construction, commissioning, and operations.

Risk Management
-
Identify and evaluate HSSEQ risks specific to wind farms, solar plants, and integrated BESS/hybrid systems.

Develop mitigation strategies and emergency response procedures to address identified risks and ensure business continuity.
Continuous Improvement & Auditing

Conduct regular HSSEQ audits, inspections, and incident investigations; implement corrective and preventive actions.

Promote a culture of continuous improvement, ensuring lessons learned and best practices are shared across projects and teams.
Stakeholder Engagement

Collaborate with engineers, project managers, site managers, external contractors, and regulatory bodies to align on HSSEQ expectations and performance.

Act as the primary HSSEQ contact for key stakeholders, including executive leadership, regulatory agencies, local communities and participating in different Fortum group steering committees.
Training & Development

Oversee the design and delivery of HSSEQ training programs tailored to wind, solar, BESS, and hybrid operations.

Encourage ongoing professional development and certification within the HSSEQ team and broader workforce.
Performance Reporting

Define and track HSSEQ KPIs, producing regular status reports and analyses for senior management.

Monitor industry trends, emerging technologies, and regulatory changes, incorporating relevant updates into HSSEQ strategy.
Incident & Emergency Management

Establish robust incident management and emergency response plans, taking into account the unique profiles of wind turbines, solar arrays, and BESS/hybrid systems.

Coordinate incident investigations and root cause analyses, ensuring proper documentation and follow-up actions.
As Head of HSSEQ, you will report to Director Construction & Operations, Wind & Solar.
About you
To be successful in the role of Head of HSSEQ, you should possess the following qualifications and skills:

Masters or bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Environmental Science, Occupational Health & Safety, or related field. A Master’s degree is preferred.

Several years of HSSEQ experience, ideally within renewable energy or similar industrial setting

Professional HSSEQ certifications (e.g., NEBOSH, IOSH, ISO Lead Auditor) are desirable.

Strong knowledge of HSSEQ regulations, standards, and best practices.

Proven track record of building and implementing risk and quality management frameworks.

Demonstrated success in leading teams and driving a safety-first culture.
-
Experience in handling emergency response in remote or large-scale industrial settings.

Fluency in written and spoken English; additional language skills, especially Finnish or Swedish, are highly valued

Familiarity with BESS and hybrid energy solutions is advantageous.
